Unfortunately this local hardware store in our town can’t compete with the big box stores and big chains. So sad.

I’ve seen my share of antique stores in the US and Europe, and the Clinton Antique Center is at the top of MY list. Every time I walk in I lose myself for hours. The selection is excellent and changes quite frequently, so there are always new discoveries.

That’s what the bumper sticker says on the fuel tank. And it looks like this Harley Davidson has seen quite a bit of road in its lifetime. Photographed in Branford, CT.

It was such a beautiful night after a day of 90 degrees that I went to the beach at midnight, only to finally look at my watch and realize I had spent 2 hours taking pictures and playing around with my flashlight.

I was lucky enough to catch the one day when Horseshoe Crabs come to our town beach to mate. There were at least 15 pairs of these ‘living fossils’ (so-called by Charles Darwin because they look just like their fossilized ancestors) horsing around (pardon the pun) in the shallow water.

Well, it’s creepy enough to be haunted, although I only saw signs of teenage transgressions (i.e. graffiti) when I visited the Seaside Sanatorium in Waterford, CT. It was built in the 1930s as a convalescent home for young children suffering from Tuberculosis, and shut down in the 1990s.
Here are a few more shots, in addition to the previous post. Click on any image to see them in slide show format.
That’s the eerie graffiti I found in an old abandoned sanatorium on the Connecticut seaside. Which one do you like better: color or black&white?

I discovered an abandoned factory building in Bridgeport, CT, that offered some good opportunities for HDR photography and playing around with various filters.

After so many posts of frozen flowers, icy ponds, snowy trees and wind-swept beaches, I decided I HAD to post something sunny and warm. Here’s our beach in the summer – a far cry from the empty and icy beach it is now. Can’t wait for summer!

Hammonasset Beach in Connecticut is covered in these shells. Finding a spot where they take up the entire viewfinder wasn’t difficult. Deciding whether I like the color or b&w version better was tough.

Now on with the regular post: A visit to the local antique store is always a source for great macro photography, even when I just have my iphone with me. Here’s what I found when strolled through there last week:

I think that cropping some pictures of large vistas focuses the eye on the essential part of the picture – too much sky and things tend to get lost. Here are some recent pictures where I tried that approach:
Ok, it didn’t take long before I took our new dog, Skylark, to the beach for a photo session. She’s a 10-year old retired Guide Dog for the Blind from California, who is now getting used to Connecticut weather and the notion that it’s OK to chase bunnies and squirrels. She already took control of the backyard, which she patrols diligently. Soon this sweet and well-mannered German Shepherd will think she owns the whole neighborhood..
The town of Branford, CT, honored all men and women killed in action in Afghanistan and Iraq with flags. One for each casualty. A powerful reminder of the futility of war.

This is Kearney, a retired Guide Dog for the Blind who had enjoyed her retirement with us for the last 4 1/2 years before passing away last month. This is how I’ll always remember her – slightly leaning from a stroke (which she recovered from almost fully), attentive, and super sweet. And next week, we’ll get a new addition to the family, yet another retired Guide Dog that needs a home, named Skylark (and also a German Shepherd). I’m VERY excited!
Taken a few days before hurricane Sandy, when the weather was still nice enough to wander to the beach without a heavy jacket.

Fall is definitely here: we had the first frost in CT, and that provided some nice photo opportunities:

Today the sky was so blue I just had to post some pictures of it. And the fall blooms provided a nice contrast. It was the kind of gorgeous day that made me think of one of my favorite songs that always gets my feet tapping: ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ by ELO (“Sun is shining in the sky, there ain’t a cloud in sight…”).

Watching these graceful herons at our beach sure awakened in me the desire to fly. I’m glad that the Wright brothers did something about it.

Several herons (or egrets) made the marsh near our town beach their hunting ground today. What graceful creatures – and perfect for photographers since they tend to stand very still as they wait for unsuspecting fish to appear at their feet.
this one took off as soon as I got closer than 100 feet.

A late afternoon drive around our town revealed you don’t have to go to an antique store to find antiques.
I’m sure this snow plow hasn’t seen any action for years.
And the antique store has turned into an antique….
