The Blacksmith & Wagon Shop in Virginia City, MT, was full of great detail and beautifully lit:
Grocery shopping, 150 years ago. I can only imagine what wonderful sounds that old cash register made when used (see last pic).

I don’t think so. Looks like the comfort of women’s shoes hasn’t changed in over a century. Captured in a store window in Virginia City, MT:
This band was playing (badly out of tune) Dixieland Jazz in an old-fashioned theatre in Virginia City, an old mining town in Montana:
Captured this Air Force veteran at a motorcycle rally in Ennis, Montana this past weekend. Loved his jacket. And had a nice chat with him and his wife.

Caught this on the one sunny day that we were here, viewed from our living room window. What a gorgeous part of the country!

Driving through Montana I am always fascinated by the wide open spaces, probably because there aren’t many in Connecticut. The bottom one is of the battlefield of the Little Bighorn, site of Custer’s Last Stand.
On a recent trip to Yellowstone, my son and I saw just about every major animal except moose: Bison, elk, coyote, bear (with bear cub), wolves. Here are a few shots I liked:

Hundreds of acres of forest in Yellowstone Park were destroyed in massive fires in 1988, requiring over 9,000 firefighters and affecting almost 800,000 acres of forest (bigger than Rhode Island). The remnants of that destruction can still be seen:

This 13-point elk buck was watching over a herd of elk in Yellowstone National Park. I was fortunate enough to sneak up for 2 close-ups without being noticed (well, the second picture he’s looking right at me, so who am I kidding?).

On a recent trip to Yellowstone, I saw this bison and took these photos while I followed it for an hour as it crossed Lamar valley, chomping on grass while generally ignoring me. He must have known he had nothing to fear from me. Figures, since he’s the largest land animal in North America, weighing roughly a ton.

On a few clear nights, I marveled at the stars above Big Sky. Here are three of my favorite shots. Click on any one of them to see them in full screen slide show format.

This moose didn’t seem to be too concerned about me taking pictures. The other creatures actually enjoyed it (giving me some practice with action shots).
It was SO cold that the lifts couldn’t run because the back-up power runs on diesel, and the diesel fuel was too viscous to run through the engine. Had to wait until 11am when it was only -15 degrees!
Needless to say, I rarely removed my gloves to take pictures, but here are a few, shot with the iPhone app Hipstamatic.
Arrived in Montana and took a drive through parts of Yellowstone before arriving at Big Sky today. -15F (-26C)!
This gang of elk didn’t mind the cold.

My son and I visited this old mining town recently. Founded in 1863, it was the capital of the Territory of Montana for 10 years. During that time, miners extracted over $90M ($40B in today’s dollars) of gold in the area, and the city housed about 10,000 people. Now its population is down to 132.

I spent a day last weekend in Montana with my son and we spent the entire day taking pictures. Here’s the first batch, of the scenery while driving from Bozeman to Virginia City.

A quick drive-through of Butte, MT nevertheless yielded some good photo opportunities. This is the historic downtown district, dating back to the late 1800’s when Butte supplied most of the copper produced in the US:

This is obviously not a neon sign, but it was such a clear beautiful day that I HAD to include a picture of the panoramic view.

I’m off to Montana, and thus took a look again at pictures that I took 2 years ago in Elkhorn, Montana, an abandoned mining town. I finally have the software (Nik Color Efex) to turn somewhat bland snapshots into much more interesting photographs.
