Caught this on the one sunny day that we were here, viewed from our living room window. What a gorgeous part of the country!

Our dog Mario enjoyed the first snow of the year, especially on the beach at low tide:

Walking the dog at the same early, but now darker, time (6:30), and during a recent snowfall, provided new perspectives:

No – it’s just the sun that’s melting the ice and snow around our house – finally!

This lovely spot outside our house is even quieter in winter, when the snow smothers all sounds.

I got a taste of what it must feel like to cross the Arctic ice when I walked across the frozen bay of our little town beach (for 2 minutes). The tides caused much of the ice to break in unusual formations, as seen in the second picture.
These ice flows were waiting for high tide to float and join their companions in the Long Island Sound:

The cold winter finally has frozen Clinton Harbor. I braved the cold this morning to capture the scene at sunrise.

Not sure what kind of tree this is, but I loved this twisted, gnarled, lonely pine tree near Lone Mountain in Montana.

The temperatures have been low enough that the salt water of Long Island Sound can freeze, and pile up on our town beach. Click on any photo to see them in slideshow mode.

I left my house under blue sky on Monday. An hour later I was driving through a heavy snow storm. Will winter never stop in Connecticut?!?
The sky was dominated by Orion (the constellation, not the winter storm) during my last night at Big Sky, Montana.

This moose didn’t seem to be too concerned about me taking pictures. The other creatures actually enjoyed it (giving me some practice with action shots).
It was SO cold that the lifts couldn’t run because the back-up power runs on diesel, and the diesel fuel was too viscous to run through the engine. Had to wait until 11am when it was only -15 degrees!
Needless to say, I rarely removed my gloves to take pictures, but here are a few, shot with the iPhone app Hipstamatic.
It was snowing heavily, but that didn’t deter these folks from enjoying a romantic sleigh ride through the forests of Stowe, VT.

The winter storm is providing some (but not many) photo opportunities, as I don’t venture far from home. Here are two shots from the neighborhood.

Tomorrow ends my last winter visit to Stowe, VT. Haven’t taken too many pictures lately because I feel like I’ve exhausted the possibilities, and because skiing has taken precedence. But here are a few that I liked from this week:
Fresh snow, a setting sun, plus some fiddling with various filters, and voila: a different take on the typical sunset.
I pass this gazebo every time I walk our dog through the woods of Vermont. Finally I’ve taken a picture of it that I like:

We didn’t get as much as snow as CT (32 inches/80cm!), but still got nice fluffy snow that blanketed everything:
This color is ubiquitous in Vermont and really stands out, Â especially in the snow.

At -20 degrees at night in Vermont, the windows get nicely frosted. Brrrr!  Ice flowers are  less common these days, since everyone now has double-paned windows, where these formations rarely show up. These were on a single-paned garage window.
