Taking a breather from football and enjoying the early morning views from Corcovado, including the Maracana stadium, looking as if a spaceship had landed in the middle of the city.

Trying out some new filters that Google just added to its Nik Efex collection. Here’s a wet plate filter used on a beach picture I took a few months ago.

The river near our house always offers some great vistas when the water is calm. These 2 shots were from last week. I hope we’ll see some leaves on these trees soon…
A hazy and foggy morning created some good opportunities to isolate this tree from the background (which is usually a green marsh).

This ride from Washington, DC to New Haven, CT on Amtrak will leave you thinking that all of America consists of refineries, construction sites, abandoned factories, parking lots and water towers. Nevertheless, I was fascinated by what whizzed by my window. Click on any picture to view in slide show format.

It was SO cold that the lifts couldn’t run because the back-up power runs on diesel, and the diesel fuel was too viscous to run through the engine. Had to wait until 11am when it was only -15 degrees!
Needless to say, I rarely removed my gloves to take pictures, but here are a few, shot with the iPhone app Hipstamatic.
Arrived in Montana and took a drive through parts of Yellowstone before arriving at Big Sky today. -15F (-26C)!
This gang of elk didn’t mind the cold.
It was snowing heavily, but that didn’t deter these folks from enjoying a romantic sleigh ride through the forests of Stowe, VT.

You come across all kinds of windmills in Belgium – old ones from the mid 1700s to new ones towering over the freeway.
Frost is starting to appear in the morning, making for some gorgeous sunrises over the field behind our house. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Long Island Sound at sunset, as viewed from our local beach. And if you haven’t seen ‘Dead Calm’ – I highly recommend this little claustrophobic thriller about a couple on a boat taking on a shipwrecked stranger.

My son and I visited this old mining town recently. Founded in 1863, it was the capital of the Territory of Montana for 10 years. During that time, miners extracted over $90M ($40B in today’s dollars) of gold in the area, and the city housed about 10,000 people. Now its population is down to 132.

On Saturday I participated in Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk by joining one of thousands of group, this one located in Guilford, CT. We spent a couple hours on the shore taking pictures and exchanging photo tips, and enjoyed ourselves despite the overcast weather. Which means it’s a good time for black&white pictures. Actually, these were locks that control the flow in one of the many canals in the Netherlands. But from afar, I was reminded of the AT-AT Walkers from Star Wars (original below):
