These guys took advantage of the nice breeze in the afternoon, and I took advantage of the setting sun’s light to capture their acrobatics from the beach. Great way to conclude a relaxing holiday weekend. Click on any picture to view them in large format slide show.

Long Island Sound at sunset, as viewed from our local beach. And if you haven’t seen ‘Dead Calm’ – I highly recommend this little claustrophobic thriller about a couple on a boat taking on a shipwrecked stranger.

Despite rain delays, the stands were packed for the Federer match. Even people on the other court tried to get a peek of the match:

After a day of overcast skies, the sun finally managed to get through in the late afternoon, for a beautiful view of one of the many canals in this beautiful city.

I was lucky enough to catch the one day when Horseshoe Crabs come to our town beach to mate. There were at least 15 pairs of these ‘living fossils’ (so-called by Charles Darwin because they look just like their fossilized ancestors) horsing around (pardon the pun) in the shallow water.

The light is getting more and more beautiful in the evenings here in Connecticut. Soon the temperature will cooperate, too.

Fresh snow, a setting sun, plus some fiddling with various filters, and voila: a different take on the typical sunset.
It’s now so cold that the saltwater is freezing, leaving interesting ice formations on the beach at low tide.

This was caught one late afternoon from my window in Manhattan – looking towards New Jersey, just across the Hudson River. The moon is setting over Columbia Terraces in Weehawken, NJ.

I think that cropping some pictures of large vistas focuses the eye on the essential part of the picture – too much sky and things tend to get lost. Here are some recent pictures where I tried that approach:
I know that the rule is to keep the sun out of the picture, and preferably behind you, but this time I thought I’d experiment doing the opposite.

Manhattan Solstice or ‘Manhattanhenge’ is one of two days every year when the sun sets exactly in line with the crosstown streets of Manhattan. Because New York’s grid isn’t aligned exactly along East/West, this phenomenon doesn’t occur on June 21 (like in Stonehenge), but on two days spaced evenly around summer solstice (this shot was taken on July 11, 2012).
