No plants were harmed in the shooting of these photographs: with just a black cardboard backdrop and sunlight at just the right angle, I captured these irises in our backyard.

These guys took advantage of the nice breeze in the afternoon, and I took advantage of the setting sun’s light to capture their acrobatics from the beach. Great way to conclude a relaxing holiday weekend. Click on any picture to view them in large format slide show.

Shot these pictures at the edge of town. What exactly was torn down I don’t know, but the big mountains of debris attracted my attention.
Something was torn down near our town, and the mountain of steel girders caught my eye. Didn’t see any evidence of monsters, though.

The river near our house always offers some great vistas when the water is calm. These 2 shots were from last week. I hope we’ll see some leaves on these trees soon…
A hazy and foggy morning created some good opportunities to isolate this tree from the background (which is usually a green marsh).

This ride from Washington, DC to New Haven, CT on Amtrak will leave you thinking that all of America consists of refineries, construction sites, abandoned factories, parking lots and water towers. Nevertheless, I was fascinated by what whizzed by my window. Click on any picture to view in slide show format.

I left my house under blue sky on Monday. An hour later I was driving through a heavy snow storm. Will winter never stop in Connecticut?!?
Cartoons on the iPad are much more compelling than those on TV, as I discovered when I observed these visiting kids lounging on our couch.
‘Kaffeeklatsch is German for ‘chatting and gossiping over coffee with friends’, and it’s what I witnessed today at a coffee shop. These two ladies were truly enjoying the coffee and their conversation.

This moose didn’t seem to be too concerned about me taking pictures. The other creatures actually enjoyed it (giving me some practice with action shots).
It was SO cold that the lifts couldn’t run because the back-up power runs on diesel, and the diesel fuel was too viscous to run through the engine. Had to wait until 11am when it was only -15 degrees!
Needless to say, I rarely removed my gloves to take pictures, but here are a few, shot with the iPhone app Hipstamatic.

I caught these folks napping in the same park in Paris – I guess the afternoon sunshine made everyone a bit sleepy. Wish it were that warm here, now…
The winter storm is providing some (but not many) photo opportunities, as I don’t venture far from home. Here are two shots from the neighborhood.
