Beautiful Debris   2 comments

Shot these pictures at the edge of town. What exactly was torn down I don’t know, but the big mountains of debris attracted my attention.

Godzilla may have stopped by   3 comments

Something was torn down near our town, and the mountain of steel girders caught my eye. Didn’t see any evidence of monsters, though.

The river near our house always offers some great vistas when the water is calm. These 2 shots were from last week. I hope we’ll see some leaves on these trees soon…

The Tiny Streets of Bruges   7 comments

Bruges is full of small streets, unexpected views, and gorgeous canal scenes. It’s definitely my favorite small city in Europe. Plus, the chocolate and fries are to die for.

Virginia City, Montana   7 comments

My son and I visited this old mining town recently. Founded in 1863, it was the capital of the Territory of Montana for 10 years. During that time, miners extracted over $90M ($40B in today’s dollars) of gold in the area, and the city housed about 10,000 people. Now its population is down to 132.

World Wide Photo Walk – Guilford, CT   4 comments

On Saturday I participated in Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk by joining one of thousands of group, this one located in Guilford, CT. We spent a couple hours on the shore taking pictures and exchanging photo tips, and enjoyed ourselves despite the overcast weather. Which means it’s a good time for black&white pictures. Best Antique Store in my World   3 comments

I’ve seen my share of antique stores in the US and Europe, and the Clinton Antique Center is at the top of MY list. Every time I walk in I lose myself for hours. The selection is excellent and changes quite frequently, so there are always new discoveries.

Hidden Places: Abandoned and Haunted Sanatorium   17 comments

Well, it’s creepy enough to be haunted, although I only saw signs of teenage transgressions (i.e. graffiti) when I visited the Seaside Sanatorium in Waterford, CT. It was built in the 1930s as a convalescent home for young children suffering from Tuberculosis, and shut down in the 1990s.

Faster, Higher, Bigger   3 comments

I had the privilege of seeing last week, from my window, three icons of modern day transportation lined up next to each other: The Concorde (fastest passenger jet ever), the  Space Shuttle (highest altitude orbital space craft ever), and the Queen Mary 2 (largest Ocean Liner* ever built):

Concorde, Space Shuttle and Queen Mary 2 next to each other on Manhattan's Hudson River bank

The Space Shuttle is on the deck of the aircraft carrier (now museum) Intrepid, while the Concorde is on a pier right next to it, in between the Space Shuttle and the Queen Mary 2.

*There are now some cruise ships that are bigger than the Queen Mary 2, but she remains the largest Ocean Liner (a vessel that has a set route between two ports – in this case Southampton and New York – and is built to withstand rough seas).
